financial times and guardian images of ukraine war

one of the most moving and emotional couple of days of my life have been spent working for the financial times on an illustration for an article sent to me direct from the front line in Ukraine by a journalist who, with his wife, was learning to use a weapon to help fight the russian invasion. Not just the words he wrote but being in touch with him and another female journalist elsewhere sheltering in an underground station with other families with all the belongings they could carry – the photos she sent of children sleeping on the floor and playing with each other tbh made me cry as I explained it to my kids last week. After finishing it was heart breaking to wish him luck and hope him and his family survive I was so honoured to work with him and have a chance to do something to help rather than just sit and read the news every day in horror. Last night there were more tears when I received a message from him from Ukraine forwarded on by the FT editor. It’s been such an emotional week I know we all feel the utter horror of what’s happening especially those of us who grew up during the cold war. The article goes live today on line and in print in the @ft_weekend Hope you have a chance to pick up a copy. All our thoughts are with Okeksandr and his family and everyone in Ukraine fighting and trying to survive.
